On Saturday May 3rd and Sunday May 4th the Women’s Division 1 and Division 2 regional rugby playoffs will take place at the Tree Farm recreational facility in Essex Junction, VT. Eight teams from New England, New York and New Jersey will compete in two days of games for the Atlantic North berth to the national league semi-finals to be played May 17-18th in Pittsburgh, PA.

Among the teams participating will be host Burlington Women’s Rugby Club. They will be playing in the division II championship with Beantown and Charles River (both from Boston) and Brooklyn. The division I championship will be decided between Albany, Providence, Boston and Monmouth, NJ. The four semi-final games will occur on Saturday between 9am and 3pm with the DII and D1 championship games being played on Sunday at 10am and noon respectively.

This year represents the Burlington women’s third consecutive participation in regional playoffs following on from their national championship appearance in 2011, where they finished 6th overall. The Burlington Rugby Club celebrated its 35th anniversary last year and the women’s team has been in existence since 1997. Coaches Tree Bertram and Liz Royer guided the squad of more than 30 players through their eight regular season games last fall. The team finished with a winning 6-2 record, securing the #2 seed for regional playoffs. Now they are preparing to win two more games and the regional title on home soil.

The Burlington Club and its recent success represent the vibrant rugby community growing in Vermont. More and more people are passionate about and dedicated to the sport. There are an increasing number of high school, college and club sides in the state, which is helping to improve the skill level of players being produced here. The competition, the first weekend in May, is an exciting opportunity for the Burlington club to showcase the unique and exciting sport of rugby. It gives people a chance to see a high standard of games played in their own backyard. Parking will be available and there is no cost to come out and watch. Everyone is welcome so please come support your local team.

The Burlington Rugby Club would like to thank its two main sponsors, Long Trail Brewing and RiRa Irish Pub on Church St, Burlington for their continued support.
